Hidden Paradise on Big Rideau Lake

Memories of our place on Big Rideau Lake

*** This website was originally created as a sales tool when our property was for sale. That sale was completed in December, 2014. We have preserved the welcome-page overview as a remembrance for the nostalgic enjoyment of our many friends and family who, for nearly 35 years, helped us to build, renovate, maintain and enjoy this slice of paradise. The remainder of the site – all the detailed sub-sections -- have been removed or hidden for the privacy of the new owners. ***

This comfortable 2-storey Viceroy custom “Superhome”, tucked away in a clean, tranquil, natural bay on prime Rideau Waterway waterfront provided a combination of 4-season comfort, convenience, privacy, pristine nature and fabulous water-sports...  paradise for boaters and nature-lovers. Our idea of living at the lake was largely about simplicity and comfort, privacy and serenity, harmony with nature, respect for the environment, a modest energy footprint, and simple enjoyment of land and lake: this was our paradise!

The dwelling centerpiece was a 36x14 foot 2-story “Great Hall” living room and studio with woodstove/fireplace, pine walls & cathedral ceiling, balcony/loft, triple skylight, nine windows with lake views. There were 4 bedrooms, 1-1/2 baths, a large eat-in country kitchen with adjacent separate “Butler’s Pantry”, and heated, insulated drive-in basement/garage/storage.  Simply finished in nature’s colours and neutral tones, extensive knotty pine walls and ceilings, porcelain tile, hardwood and premium berber floors, varnished Philippine Mahogany, Red Cedar and California Redwood trim, custom Maple, Cedar and Birch cabinetry.  Electric and wood heat, air conditioning, high-quality well-water and septic systems, modern 200-amp copper electrical and copper/ABS plumbing systems … At its core this was a premium “Viceroy” home, engineered and manufactured to their ultimate “Superhome” residential standard, with 2x6/R24 walls, R-40 vented steel-truss cathedral ceilings, triple-glazed California Redwood windows, R2000 vapour barriers and seals, etc.

There was an 800 sq-ft basement with drive-in storage, plus  approximately 450 sq-ft of decks and  400 sq-ft of docks. Facilities included bonfire and horseshoe pits, wood-sheds, heavy-duty cruiser-grade 240-volt electric marine railway, sea-doo lift, small-craft launching ramp, gentle natural landscaping including terraces, pathways, planters and gardens. The lot was 2 acres of mixed forest, with  255 feet of natural, eco-friendly, low-maintenance shoreline…  great privacy, seclusion & solitude, nature everywhere, year-round neighbours nearby, but out of sight, and quality, year-round road access.

Located among extensive not-for-development Crown Lands in a safe, natural, sheltered, secluded, family-friendly bay-- perfect for the canoe, kayak, paddleboat and for day and nite swimming & skinny-dipping, snorkeling and fishing and amazing, protected dockage for our boat. Warm water for swimming at the dock, a diving raft just off-shore, and the rugged, picturesque vistas, fabulous boating and deep, crystal-clear waters of Big Rideau Lake’s preferred North Shore just meters away at the mouth of the secluded bay.  We could: cruise anywhere via the historic Rideau Waterway System, a United Nations World Heritage Site… hike, jog and ski the Trans Canada and Rideau Trails which pass within a few minutes walk of the property… explore nearby provincial and national crown lands, parks and nature preserves, several within walking or canoeing distance… and 100 other lakes within a 50-mile radius... shop and dine in many and varied spots accessible by car or boat… and in winter, snowmobile on nearby trails and skate on our bay. Savouring nature’s beauty, in comfort, in every season. There was so much to enjoy and to treasure!
